Release: Semiotics Too?

Incidentals

This is the release of my newest UI, Semiotics 2. It is a “remake,” in the loosest terms, of my previous Discord UI Semiotics. This UI utilizes a whole new suite of mods, and has some new and different functionality. At the same time, it does not have nearly the detail that the previous iteration did. I will try to parse out things that I left off of the UI (and I did it for specific reasons) and what I included. There was some pressure to push this thing out, so it’s not as polished as I would have liked it. List of addons is included at the bottom. All textures are Halcyone’s, and the primary font used is Visitor1.

Things I did NOT include which you will probably need to add:

  • Raid Frames: Everyone has such particular needs, and the UI is so modular, that I figured it was best not to include them. There was some rough stuff done with the PitBull raid frames, but they’re currently disabled.
  • Focus Frame: I know everyone loves the focus frame, but again the UI is pretty modular and depending on what you want to do you might have wanted it in a different place.
  • Damage Meters: They’re stupid, I don’t use them. Everyone has their own taste, not worth it.
  • Threat Meters: Same reason as damage meters.
  • Any kind of Arena Anything

AddOns Included:

  • Align
  • Aloft
  • Bagnon
  • BugSack
  • Capping
  • CooldownCount
  • CowTip
  • cyCircled (VolM skin)
  • Discord Library
  • eePaels2
  • ErrorMonster
  • FuBar (Ammo_Fu, Clock_Fu, Experience_Fu)
  • Minimalist
  • PitBull (Aura was modified)
  • Prat
  • Quartz
  • SatrinaBuffFrames
  • SCT/D
  • SharedMedia
  • SimpleMinimap

Pink? What the fuck. You broke your own rule.

I don’t recall a “thou shalt not use awesome colors” rule. :[

What displays Character and Target health and name like that?

Don’t use portraits. They’re stupid, useless, and ugly. Yes, sometimes portraits are used well – that doesn’t mean they’re good elements. It’s like the color pink. Yeah, sometimes people use it and it doesn’t look awful – but I’m still not going to buy a pink Polo (well…yes I would, but still).

    You spelled eePanels2 wrong.

Don’t like it. I just see it as Hal’s interface with stuff moved around a bit

Hey guys, guess what class the screenshot was taken of. Yeh, that’s why it’s pink.

    Good job, as always. =]

Given where my unitframes are, and given their relationship to the rest of the UI I thought class colors were appropriate. The next UI I’ve been playing around with for my Paladin is not going to use class colors on the health bars, but meh.

Also, Azande – there are three things about this UI that are related to/inspired by Hal:

    1) The tooltip texture! Which I only use because of limitations in eePanels and general laziness
    2) The Background texture on the panels
    3) The bar texture.

So, I guess it probably looks like Ry-Guy’s UI…if you don’t know what you’re looking at >.>

Oooo, and Sero, that’s done with DogTags.

I just made new text fields for each one in the appropriate unitframe, then used a combination of spaces and hard returns to place them

The actual code is pretty simple:

    Target is [Name:ClassColor " - ":ClassColor PercentHP:ClassColor]
    Self is [PercentHP:ClassColor " - ":ClassColor Name:ClassColor]

I’m going to be modifying Trouble’s Dot indicators to add to my next UI which I’m pretty excited about :)

Your header reminds me of Magritte.

    “Leci n’est pas une pipe.”

I might not know what I’m looking at but as far as I see it, position of elements and textures determine pretty much how a UI looks like.

It has already been proved by Hal’s that the textures work, and you have proved that elements position work with Semiotics. Unfortunately, from my point of view, in this case the sum of the two does not create something superior to the two UI you took as starting point, but hey, I’m willing to be educated.

PS. General laziness is not a good excuse ;)

    Small addition to above post:

Unfortunately, from my point of view, in this case the sum of the two does not create something superior or even equal to the two UI you took as starting point

I guess you’ve been so unclear in your criticism (you’ve effectively said “the two things just don’t work). That “educating” you on why this particular UI works isn’t really possible.

I’m not really suggesting that this is a movement beyond the original Semiotics, though I think it is aesthetically more appealing using Hal’s textures and an updated color palette. In reality, this was nothing more than a method of updating Semiotics to 2.4 and changing some mild aesthetic features.

I have certainly added and changed things based upon my personal tastes and some holes that I found in the original UI. While I like keeping most information centralized, I found that I relied on the bottom of the screen much to heavily in the original version. Thus the addition of a ‘text-hud.’ I like the use of class colors on the health bars because of their proximity to the heavily-viewed play space.

    So…if you think it’s ugly….sorry?

    Repent, heathen!

    “So…if you think it’s ugly….sorry?”

Hey, that’s just my opinion, no need to apologise

Thanks! I’m gonna give it a try.

Nice work with the UI. Really like it.
