Did I Break WoW.com?

I don’t want to claim too much credit here, but it seems like Mr/s. Eliah Hecht has stopped “reporting” the reader UI of the week over at WoW.com. I wonder how much I contributed to that? I feel like a kid who got a fancy new toy, played with it too hard, and ruined it =(

That’s too bad that WoW.com did not feature any UI this week :(

But, fear not Rob we have a new candidate and looks like its the perfect candidate for a top notch review from you.

I love the clusterfuck of Ui elements at the bottom and things overiding other elements.

Typing a reply whhile drinking coffee at 13:00pm is not a good idea. It seems that WoR started this Raid UI spotlight some weeks before.

    Too bad :(

But worldofraids offers another Raiding UI Spotlight featuring at least two crappy fonts and a collection of ulgy borders. Give it a try!

Hey, have you seen this disaster of a UI?

    http://www.nUIaddon.com

Not only is it an ugly mess of information overload, but the guy whines on a consistent basis on the UI forums for people to donate because he wasted so much precious time writing the code for this piece of crap. Even worse, he actually has a small group of fanboys who defend him at every whim! /barf

This is why we can’t have nice things Rob.

    I agree with Jolty

Not only is his work eye-gouging to look at, but he actually charged (can’t anymore) for an “advanced” version that he thinks is better because it includes extra features that he doesn’t know can easily be replicated by existing addons.

The only thing that bugs me about this ui is the lack of quest tracking. I am either missing something, or it is turned off.

When omgphatloots became Post Your UI or Rant on Someone else’s UI.

  10. Comment by phishr | 08/12/09 at 2:17 pm

I’ve never seen Ishtara post her UI anywhere else. Really.

  11. Comment by Led ++ | 08/12/09 at 3:58 pm

Neither is this a blog to let people know you updated your UI. :)

  12. Comment by Ishtara | 08/12/09 at 4:33 pm

    @ Led…

My post was more so directed @ Rob and I didn’t want to put it in another blog thread like the one for Duke’s Ui, that would be inappropriate. This seemed to be a rant blog so I figured it didn’t matter if one comment wasn’t about wow.com

I also figured I would post it here because I cannot post on the WowEuro forums…and I know a lot of ya’ll visit this website.

Did you not get your coffee this morning or something? Why the hate on a fellow designer? :(

Long time reader, first time commenter! Been a little bit shy to say anything, but I’m curious for an opinion as I recently released my first UI package.

I realise you aren’t going to like a few things (display of own name/class/lvl, visible SLDT, focus/tot fairly large) but was wondering what you thought otherwise.

I’ve also been playing around with another version:

Scrolling combat text and the tooltip (overly complex) are a bit messed up, but I ran out of time before 0watcher attempts to continue playing.

    Cheers!

It’s very Caith-like, but that is not a bad thing. Overall its clear, shows useful information, and is aesthetically above average, so I like it.

A couple of complaints: the timers on SBF are a little bulky and inefficient so try using something along the lines of the OmniCC style. And the MSBT and Powerauras both displaying procs is a little redundant. These are easily overlooked in my opinion though.

Also, where did you get that minimap boarder? I WANT.

  15. Comment by Avelie | 08/27/09 at 2:03 pm

Minimap border is from Rob’s download! So is the buttonfacade skin.

MSBT and Power Auras only display 1 shared proc: Hot Streak. I have it showing for both because with 4pc 8.5, 20% of the time your hot streak is not consumed, but it doesn’t “re-proc”. Power Auras stays up until you lose the aura, which makes me able to see how long I have the instant pyroblast up for. I actually just replaced my 4pc this week, so I will likely be changing that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aszq6_RQbwI << there is a vid of me in raid combat (0 watcher kill) if I was unclear, I realised after rereading it might not make total sense.

I once said something bad about nUI. Then I got eaten alive by angry supporters. :/

  18. Comment by Questionable | 08/28/09 at 2:24 am

After seeing it in action, I must say I like the way it makes use of screen real-estate. You can disable the Hot Streak! proc notice in MSBT, but I suppose that isn’t that important. One thing though, is your target frame has ZOMGWTFDEBUFFS. I would suggest having debuff sorting or limiting the number of them to about 10 or so, if you PvE mainly then it shouldn’t matter and you may even be able to turn them off.

  19. Comment by Avelie | 08/28/09 at 11:08 am

Yes, my target frame has a lot of debuffs. I really like it that way, but that’s totally personal preference. I’ve played with it filtered before, but I also like to be able to see who is attacking the right targets, etc in raids. This is why my tooltip is a bit bulkier than normal too. On something like 0 Yogg or Algalon you need to see who is attacking what to make a fight go smoothly (IE, are casters switching to corruptors outside to dot? Are dots up on them constantly? Are constrictors dotted quickly?).

  20. Comment by Brakhage | 08/29/09 at 6:51 pm

There used to be forums at omgphatloots. This is why.

@nUI: it’s too bad that it sucks, and it’s too bad that people think it’s good. It’s frustrating when idiots defend things that are bad. I mean, we may be jerks (some of us), but our egotism is founded in experience and knowledge. We’re not jerks because we like to be jerks. We’re jerks because you’re idiots. (Not *YOU*, of course. Just a general sort of “you.”)

@Ishtara: Don’t listen to that mean Led. You post links wherever you feel like posting links. Looking at the pics tho, the text that turns red looks like it would be really hard to read when it was red.

@Av: I like your UI; the only thing I don’t like is the grid/raidframes placement gives the whole UF/bars setup a cluttered, unbalanced feel. I have a similar announcement problem with balance druid 4t8; I may have to look into Power Auras (though, as you indicated, 4t8 days are likely to be over soon).

Finally: @Rob: I hope the Heisenburg (sp?) principle doesn’t bite you in the ass on this one: if they start reviewing horrible UIs again just because you claimed to have broken them, I will be very sad and stuff.
